
Prof. George Fragulis, Director of MSc
Dr. George F. Fragulis is a Full Professor in the Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Western Macedonia. His research interests include Mathematical systems and control theory, Analysis and Synthesis of Singular/Descriptor Systems, polynomial descriptions of linear multivariable systems, Machine Learning, Fuzzy Systems, Robotics & Autonomous systems, Robotic Vision, Web programming and Applications. He published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences (over 25 IEEE Journal & Conference contributions). He participated in 15 (3 as a PI) European (6 Horizon 2020) programs and national R&D projects and serves as a reviewer to over 100 International scientific journals & conferences in his area of expertise. He served as a Program Chairman in 16 and as a member of the Program Committee in over 30 International Conferences. Prof. Konstantinos Parisses
Konstantinos Parisis is a retired Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Western Macedonia. He holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1980) and a Ph.D. from the same Department, with a thesis entitled “Frequency control in interconnected power systems” (1994). In addition, he holds a B.Sc. in Pedagogical Studies from the Pedagogical Technical School of SELETE (1987). His research interests focus on decentralized control of interconnected systems, control of power systems and renewable energy systems, mechatronic systems, robotic technology, autonomous vehicles in agriculture (motion, control, sensors), precision agriculture, as well as energy conservation, energy efficiency and energy policy. As part of his teaching activities, he taught courses such as Industrial Systems Control (graduate level), Industrial Controllers (graduate level), Automatic Control Systems I and II (undergraduate level), Industrial Control Systems, Mechatronics, Automation and Plant Communication and Control Processes, Power Electronics I and II, Power Systems I and II and Automation at the undergraduate level. In academic administration, he served as the Director of the Graduate Program in “Mechatronics” (2018-2024), Dean of the School of Technology (2010-2015), Chair of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Power Systems (2010-2015).

Prof. Georgios Christoforidis
Dr. Georgios C. Christoforidis is Professor in Electrical Power systems in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (https://ece.uowm.gr) of the University of Western Macedonia (UOWM). Since September 2020, he has been the Head of the department and since 2023 the director of the Power and Energy Systems Laboratory (https://pesl.ece.uowm.gr/). He also coordinates the Smart Living Lab of UOWM (https://livinglab.ece.uowm.gr/), which is a member of the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL). He currently teaches the courses of Introduction to Electrical Power Systems, Special Topics in Power Systems, Photovoltaic Systems and Applications and Generation-Transmission-Distribution of Electrical Energy in the undergraduate program and the courses Power Electronics & Electrical Drives and Electrical Energy Systems in post-graduate programs. He has participated or coordinated in more than 25 international and national research projects, while he has worked as professional engineers for 10 years mainly in the renewable energy sector before beginning his academic career. His research interests include: Power systems analysis and planning, smart electrical networks, multi energy networks, distribution energy systems, integration of renewable energy systems into the grid, energy storage systems, applications of artificial intelligence methods to power systems and electromagnetic compatibility. He has published 54 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, 2 book chapters and 113 papers in international conference proceedings. His work has been acknowledged by more than 1400 citations according to Scopus, corresponding to an h-index=20 and i-index=37. He is an active member of the European Technology Innovation Platform (ETIP) in Smart Networks for Energy Transition (SNET), having served as co-chair in WG3 (Flexible Generation), an active member of European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) Joint Programme in Energy Storage, a Senior Member of IEEE, a member of CIGRE, and various other organisations.

Prof. Fotis Koumboulis
Fotis N. Koumboulis is Professor of Robotics and Industrial Automation in the Department of Digital Industry Technologies, School of Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). He is Director of the Robotics Automatic Control and Cyber-Physical Systems Laboratory of NKUA. He received the 1991/92 IEE Mather Premium Award, the 2002/03 Coaless Award, the Olympiad Medal (International Olympiad Committee in Engineering Science – Olympiad in Engineering Science 2023), the Best Paper Award (Springer International Conference on Frontiers of Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, and Multidisciplinary Applications, 2024) and is included in the Node of Academic and Scientific Excellence, Ministry of Education and Religious affairs, Greece. He has published over 350 research papers in journals, conferences and edited books. His work has attracted more than 2500 citations (H-index: 26, I10-index: 100). He has published more than 80 papers in the field of supervisor control, more than 30 papers in the field of AI applications in control, more than 20 papers in the field of switching control design, and more than 50 papers in robust control, under uncertainties and disturbances. He serves as editor of the scientific journals Frontiers in Control Engineering and International Journal of Modelling, Identification and Control. His current research interests include supervisor control, industrial control, robot control systems, multivariable control, distributed control systems, networked control systems, robust control, switching systems and cyberphysical systems. He is an IEEE Senior member.

Prof. Stergios Maropoulos
Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation University of Western Macedonia
Professor at the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering. BSc, MSc, PhD, University of Manchester/UMIST. President of the Research Committee and of the University Center for Research and Innovation. He has been a member of the Regional Research and Innovation Council and of the Special Development Program Monitoring Committee (EAP), Region of Western Macedonia. Director of the Laboratory of Mechanical Processes and Quality Control, of the Centre for Testing of Materials and Constructions (CTMC) and of the Postgraduate course (MSc) “Welding Engineering and Non- Destructive Inspection”. His research is focused on the mechanical properties of engineering materials and structures. He has published several research papers in international scientific journals and conference proceedings and has been awarded the Vanadium Award of the Institute of Materials, British Ministry of Defense, for his research in high-strength low-alloy steel. He has carried out research in identifying causes of accidents due to fracture of metal tools and machinery in British industries. Ηe has contributed to a number of national and European programmes and worked as a production and quality control manager in the metal manufacturing industry.

Assist. Prof. Aggelos Bouchouras
Aggelos Bouhouras graduated from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2005, and in 2010 he obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the same department. From 2012 to 2019, he worked as a research associate at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Technological Educational Institute of Western Macedonia, while from 2017 to 2019 he taught at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Thessaly as a scientific and academic fellow. In 2019, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Western Macedonia as an Assistant Professor, focusing on “Electric Power Distribution Systems.” In 2024, he was elected as an Associate Professor in the same department and field, where he continues to teach courses in the area of Electric Energy. Additionally, from 2013 until now, he has been teaching in the Master’s program “Mechatronics” at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Western Macedonia. His research interests include optimization of electric power distribution networks, emphasizing the implementation of the “Smart Grid” concept. He has also shown significant research activity in the area of Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring. He has participated as a researcher in 20 European and Greek research projects and has received one European (EMRP) and two national (ELKE AUTH and IKY Siemens) scholarships for postdoctoral research. He is the principal author or co-author of 30 scientific papers published in international scientific journals and 65 scientific papers presented at international scientific conferences. Furthermore, he is the principal author or co-author of 4 chapters in foreign-language scientific books. Aggelos Bouhouras is a reviewer for more than 15 scientific journals in the field of Electric Power Systems and has served on the scientific committee of various international scientific conferences. His scientific work has received international recognition, reflected in 1171 citations based on Google Scholar and 842 citations based on Scopus.
